A Russian politician close to Vladimir Putin is openly threatening Poland with an attack. He does not mention the possible alliance case of NATO.

Moscow – In the Ukraine war, Russia is not making progress as the regime in Moscow imagines. For example, a Ukrainian online portal has compiled a map of Russian losses in the Black Sea and Crimea.

Russia: Duma politician threatens NATO member Poland in TV interview

Nevertheless, a Russian politician from the state Duma has now openly threatened Ukraine's and Germany's neighbor Poland on state TV. And this despite the fact that the Poles are part of the Western defense alliance NATO. This is not the first threatening gesture from the Kremlin against Warsaw.

The Poles would understand "that it is their turn next," ultra-nationalist politician Alexei Zhuravlev said in a TV interview, according to Newsweek. The American news magazine refers to a tweet by the founder of the portal Russian Media Monitor, Julia Davis, on X (formerly Twitter).

Threatening gestures from Russia – Russia's attack would trigger NATO alliance case

Zhuravlyov, who is an ally of autocrat Vladimir Putin, reportedly said: "Another question for you, guys in the West: What are you going to do about it? They understand very well that Ukraine is finished. So what's next? Sweden is preparing, and so is the Balkans. The Poles have calmed down a bit, probably they have begun to realize that it is their turn next. Of course, we have no illusions, but we understand that they are all preparing for the next phase of the war."

What Zhuravlyov apparently concealed was that if the Russians were to actually attack Poland, the NATO alliance case would come into force. This case is governed by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty and refers to Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations (UN), which describes the right to self-defence in the event of an attack. In essence, Article 5 states that all 31 European and North American member states shall take united military countermeasures should one or more members be attacked by a foreign aggressor "in order to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area."

Vladimir Putin's Regime: Repeated Russian Threats Against Poland

Poland has been massively arming its armed forces since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On December 29, there was great excitement when a suspected Russian missile crossed the Ukrainian-Polish border. The Foreign Ministry in Warsaw then summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Russian embassy and handed him a note of protest. In it, Russia is called upon to "explain the incident of the airspace violation and the immediate cessation of such activities," the ministry said. Now Zhuravlyov followed up with threatening gestures, which are not unusual for Putin's circle in Moscow. (pm)
